Topic: Urban wild boar ecology and management in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (Spain)

Invited Speaker: María Escobar González, DVM, MSc

Brief BIO: María is a 4th year PhD student at the Autonomous University of Barcelona within the WEH research group (Wildlife Ecology and Health). Her research interests center around conservation biology and ecology, particularly examining the impact of human activities on natural ecosystems, managing human-wildlife conflicts to promote coexistence, and exploring the ecology of infectious diseases.

Wild boars, native to Eurasia, have spread across all continents except Antarctica due to human introductions. In Europe, the species faced a significant population decline after World War II due to intensive hunting. However, various factors such as global temperature increases, the absence of natural predators, and rural abandonment have led to a remarkable population resurgence since the 1980s, becoming a global concern. This overpopulation not only disrupts the ecological balance in rural environments but also extends to urban and anthropized areas. Cities like Rome, Berlin, and Barcelona are experiencing an invasion, posing risks such as traffic accidents, disease transmission, crop and garden damage, and incidents involving humans and their pets.

WILDLIFE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND DISEASE CONTROL COURSE

Course Description:

Provides specialized training in epidemiology and wildlife disease control by the SaBio research group at IREC and selected invited faculty. Lectures, practical training, and field trips are based at the IREC Wildlife Research Institute in Ciudad Real, one of Europe´s hotspots for this extraordinary scientific field.
Course is split in two weeks: 20-24 November 2023 and 18-22 March 2024

Fee: $519.84

Jose Pablo Gomez Vazquez presents his exit dissertation seminar

We congratulate Jose Pablo Gomez Vazquez on successfully presenting his exit seminar on December 7, 2021. He presented his dissertation work exploring application of agent based models to infectious disease epidemiology. The three chapters modeled different disease and explored the influence of prevention and control strategies. Pablo still is working on the submission of some of his chapters, which hopefully will be available soon to share! Now he will be starting a position as a post doc where he will be applying these methodologies to different research questions in epidemiology.

Dr Martinez Lopez Keynote Speaker at CRWAD 2018

Dr Martinez-Lopez attended the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases (CRWAD) from December 1-4th as Key note speaker to give the presentation entitled: “Big Data and Smart-Connected Epidemiology in practice”.

She also presented the poster entitled “Unraveling the role of pig trade and socio-economic factors in the spread of African Swine Fever in endemic areas”. She was also participating as a Member of the CRWAD Organization committee and moderator of one epidemiology session. CRWAD speakers.

CADMS is chosen to host GeoVet 2019 Conference

The Center for Animal Disease Modeling and Surveillance has been chosen to host the 2019 GeoVet Conference. The GeoVet conference is the only international conference specialized in spatial epidemiology. It will be held October 8-10, 2019 at the UC Davis Conference Center.
